Protesters causing public nuisance would be arrested and produced in court, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said today.

He said that the Police would take measures to quell organised protests and demonstrations across the country, which would block the roads and disrupt day-to-day affairs of the public.

Speaking about a protest in Mahiyangana, SSP Rohana said that the Police had to use the minimum force as the protesters had not come to an agreement.

“They were continuously blocking the Mahiyangana Road while arguing with police officers,” he told a news conference in Colombo. (PIYUMI FONSEKA)

The IGP SHOULD MAKE A PUBLIC STATEMENT TO THE PUBLIC AND WARN ALL PROTESTERS TO AVOID BLOCKING ROADS,ALTHOUGH THEY HAD THE RIGHT TO PROTEST.THEY SHOULD NOT BLOCK ROADS CAUSING INCONVENIENCE TO OTHERS BUT FIND OTHER SUITABLE PLACES.THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE THERE TO PROTECT PUBLIC ARE FACING SEVERE PROBLEMS AND ARE BLAMED.THIS SITUATION CANNOT BE TOLERATED AND SHOULD BE DEALT WITH.

Protests has been taking place all the time and it is not new to SL. They should have some guide lines so it wont disrupt the public daily life.

It is good that at least now if police can do this. Everybody has rights to to protest (peacefully) but they do not have rights to disrupt lives of others (general public).

If these people are a public nuisance, they are certainly to be dealt with. If they are protesting for valid reasons due to grievances not attended to, then the person causing these grievances must be dealt with.

First signs of another 88-89 era.
