The Police Department has advised motorist to desist from fixing any other lights above the headlights of vehicles and warned that legal action would be taken against those who violated the law.

“We will remove such lights and in case we find it difficult to do so, the motorists will be given a day’s time to do so and to show us that it has been. Defaulter will be taken to Courts,” Traffic DIG Amarasiri Senaratne said.

He said only ambulances and police vehicles would be allowed to use such lights and those who wished to have such lights on their vehicles would need prior approval from the Defence Ministry.

The DIG said motorists should not to cover windscreens of vehicles.

The decision was taken after receiving several reports that many vehicles were using flashing coloured lights on the windscreens. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

Good decision. There was a time when every Tom Dick and Harry used to put up a VIP or VVIP sign on their windscreens and fly through our roads without the slightest care for the public or even the traffic Signals. Once that was disallowed they started this flashing lights menace. I have seen some guys even putting their arms out and stopping the other motorists on their way. via DM iPad app

An what happen if a police constable stops a vehicle to remove one of these lights. The passenger in the back shouting in filth an threaten his life. A few days later he is assaulted or shot and his vehicle burnt. The IGP will then start a investigation against the constable and find him guilty. Finally he will loose the job. Thats what happens right now. Don't expect any valuable service from the police, they are scared. Only bootlickers will survive in the police.

99.9% used by Politicians and connected motorists and not general public. Police got to sort it at that level. Yet, it looks awkward since the clause "with Prior Approval" means same 99.9% will be covered.
