The Democratic Party led by former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka has been officially accepted as a political party under the symbol of a flaming torch, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said today.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Mr. Deshapriya said that the party would be permitted to function as a legitimate political party and contest any election.
