Report on probe over MPs with dual citizenship almost ready

The Department of Immigration and Emigration is to finalise its investigations launched to identify members of parliament who have dual citizenship.

The Department launched a special investigation last week following a request made under the Right to Information Act.

A spokesman of the department said that the relevant investigation was conducted based on a document containing the date of birth, name and national identity number of the MPs referred by the Parliament.

It was reported that Parliament has forwarded the relevant document to the Immigration and Emigration department.

The spokesman said the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration was overseas last week and had returned to Sri Lanka on Monday.

The report will be issued after the Controller General signed the document, the spokesman said.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Other nationalities are entering into our parliament not to develop our country rather, loot and sent the money to families in their original country , they use the SL passport just to get a MP job same like our guys going for middle east.

Those who have dual citizenship should resign from parliamentary membership.The law has been passed according to democratic values of the REPUBLIC SOCIALISTIC DEMOCRATIC SRI LANKA. If you say mean legislators then such legislators since independence have passed coward laws against the minority community. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

In 1949, the United National Party (UNP) government stripped the Indian Tamils of their nationality, including their right to vote. Took till 2004 when desperate to avoid further Indian interference government again granted the Indian Tamils citizenship. Since independence the majority of MPs, like even those now forming SLPP government, the SJB, the SLFP, the Dullas SLPP faction, the sole UNP MP are always doing for the sake of politics ahead of what is good for citizens since. Most people in the country believe the 225 as a whole are too much and no good, but are powerless to do anything about it, and also unable to leave to live in a decent democratic country. So, our people stuck between a rock and hard place forever.

Checking from Local immigration is not enough. These details can be hidden or not declared. The government will have to approach international agencies such as Interpol etc to investigate details of these dual citizens by making a formal govt to govt requests

Not sure if these details will be complete if the investigations are not spread further. We have our government servants appointed by politicians who are there to protect their masters. Like any other true democracy, it is up to the individual to come forward and resign if they are dual citizens. They will hide only if the situation is beneficial for them.

The immigration department has the names and the details of those who obtained dual citizenship here in their digital system. There is nothing to investigate. you could access those details at the press of a button.

All of them contested when they were prevented by the 19A. Why objections were not raised they is a mystery. If they fail to resign ASAP and await a court ruling, they must be required to pay back all wages and perks received with backup costs etc

The department will look at the information available to them and was declared by the individuals. In case if onevdon't declare the true status, false declaration, then the report is of know use. This should be handled by CID. The widely spoken subject was the citizenship of Diana gamage, she can easily get SL passport with false declaration showing SL birth certificate and NIC. In Australia sometimes back, those who had dual citizenship voluntarily resigned. This is what SL wants.

GHT - Why do you need to clutch to your foreign citizenship if you want to be a member of the SL parliament? Doesn't it sound pretty suspicious, as such a person could bolt off to his/her foreign sanctuary evading possible legal obligations? I am dual citizen for 20< yrs., but fair is fair.

When one applies for dual citizenship, one has to provide complete details re foreign citizenship and previous SL passport and ID. Following that, when the dual citizenship certificate is issued it has a reference number under which the background details are available, which is used when issuing the new SL passport. So, what is the problem in identifying who has or hasn't dual citizenship?

Sri Lankan airlines finally again having non-Sri Lankan citizen at the helm. Even our cricket team needs non-Sri Lankan coach, because Sri Lankan just don't know how to do the job. It is unfortunate our citizen trust Sri Lankan MP (or President) is actually capable of doing well because that's how our country end up in hopeless situation it is in now. Better focus on the tricks and crooked activity of MP who even live in other country, but still made great wealth since they came to parliament than look for needle in a haystack.

Channa Jayasumana will be known as another Prof. Hot Air and lose his standing in even is previous specialty once it's clear there are no dual citizens in the parliament. Then better to investigate about Channa Jayasumana new wealth since coming to parliament, in case his talk dual citizen accusations are a smokescreen for his own corruption.

The Sri Lankan who died has strayed from the good path, who went to South Korea to earn money but then got sucked into their corrupt society ways like Halloween. Other Sri Lankan who do that should be prevented from coming back to our society, straight away, as they will bring the bad ideas with them. Immigration control can have questionnaire to identify if they participate in overseas celebrations like this Halloween devil worship. And then send those who have for two weeks quarantine like drug rehab if they confess to having contaminated mind.

I think dual citizens shouldn't be allowed to contest elections. But, the new law brought in after getting elected, shouldn't be applicable for already elected. It can be a bad precedence, there could be more targetted laws to remove a certain group. Like a law, that could state age over cannot be an MP. Or an MP cannot be in the parliment for more than 10 years, etc..

Getting a dual citizenship is not a big deal anymore folks. Most of this lot must be having multiple passports and dual citizenship after all. It would only cost them 100,000/- dollars to a passport of certain Caribbean islands. Most of them and the high and mighty of society don’t even declare this themselves, so very hard to find. It’s the average to below average folks like us, who have no way in hell of getting another passport, let alone traveling abroad for a holiday even. This is just a drama being played out for the gallery.
