Food security assessment carried out by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP) revealed that approximately 8.7 million people (39.1 percent) are not consuming an adequate diet.

According to the UN agencies, this represents a dramatic deterioration compared to the third quarter of 2021, when a survey conducted by the Medical Research Institute (MRI) estimated only 3.4 percent of the households had inadequate food consumption.

In June 2022, meals predominantly consisted of rice, vegetables, oil and sugar, while consumption of fish, an important source of protein in the Sri Lankan diet, averaged just 0.8 days per week.

All foreign food aid has gone to feed politicians and their families, our 330,000 Army, followed by our hundreds of thousands of monks, The people bless them may have empty stomachs, but their souls are filled with the triple gem

If this is true, all the grandeur and pride for Independence day celebrations as expected by President Ranil seems is utterly too much. All the pride about our nation won't alleviate the protein malnutrition amongst our children that has been in our country for decades. Even the public holiday for government offices to revere the recently deceased Queen of the British is a brazen misuseof government funds. Even if 100 MPs went to the funeral of the deceased UK monarch, it would still be cheaper than having all government offices closed for a day. It's printed money those state workers having the government holiday are being paid with, and the printed money worsens inflation and make those in poverty worse off. This corrupt use of government funds by the President and government in power has to be ended as soon as possible. Even creditors owed billions will sneer at us or think worse of us for knowing we're having a public holiday for the British Queen.

Do you want to really know the cause for this frail, under nourished frame of our citizens? Look at the robust physique of our politicians and you will have the answer. But what is puzzling is how do they grow fat on a daily salary of Rs.2150/-
