The debate on the proposed domestic debt restructuring programme is to be confined to a single day, as most of the issues pertaining to it have been resolved, Senior Presidential advisor Sagala Ratnayake said.
Speaking during the UNP Bala Mandala meeting in Ratmalana, Ratnayake said the President had met MPs and others and had explained what the government intends to do with regard to the domestic debt restructuring.
“There is no need for a long debate on the domestic debt restructuring programme as many issues have been resolved. Therefore, the debate would be confined to a single day,” he said indicating that Parliament would not meet on Sunday.
He also assured that no harm would befall the EPF, ETF or on the banks.
“Domestic debt restructuring is important as the Paris Club and others want Sri Lanka to do it,” he added.
UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said many in the Opposition, including Public Finance Committee Chairman Harsha de Silva had fully understood the domestic debt restructuring process programme.
“Only the JVP and a few SJB MPs like S.M. Marikar are threatening to bring people on to the streets against the domestic debt restructuring programme,” he said. (Yohan Perera)

How can a Presidential advisor dictate to Parliament? Is he above the Parliament? This man must be brought before Parliament and dealt with for making statements about how Parliament must debate Bills.

Whilst the ruling party politicians say that Harsha has fully understood the Domestic Debt Restructuring Process Programme which does not imply that he has agreed to the process. What Marikkar says is that there are very high rates of interest offered to a selected few highlighted through the Media under the Treasury Bills/Govt. bonds on long term whereas the EPF/ETF members having substantial funds are offered stepmotherly treatment with a guaranteed percentage of only 9 per cent on their funds which will have an impact on their terminal benefits at retirement. Furthermore the EPF/ETF funds(subtantial) have been earned by the private sector over a long period of time and these are the only monies available for them for their livelihoods. at retirement. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
