Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday blamed the Congress for the partition of India and also said it was the Indira Gandhi government which gave the Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka in 1974.
The island, located between Rameswaram (India) and Sri Lanka, was traditionally used by both Sri Lankan and Indian fishermen. In 1974, then Prime minister Indira Gandhi accepted Katchatheevu as Sri Lankan territory under the "Indo-Sri Lankan Maritime Agreement".
"These people divided mother India into three parts for politics..," the prime minister said in Lok Sabha, launching a blistering attack on the Congress during his reply to a debate on a no-confidence motion.
The prime minister said the DMK government in Tamil Nadu keeps writing to him urging to bring Katchatheevu back to India.
"Katchatheevu is an island between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Somebody gave it to another country. It happened under the leadership of Indira Gandhi," he said.
"Wasn't that part of Maa Bharati there?" Modi asked in an apparent response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's remark during the debate on Wednesday.(PTI)

Mr. Modi should well remember that India as a country we know, did not exist as such before the British came. There were hundreds of kingdoms like Chola, Chera, Pandiya, Pallava, Chalukya, etc. The British made them one country. It was they who separated Pakistan and India. Not the Congress.

Neither India nor Sri Lanka existed before the British created them. India was made up of hundreds of princely states and empires. So was the island of Ceylon. When European colonialists set foot in Ceylon, there were two kingdoms: the Jaffna Kingdom and the Kottai Kingdom; and then there were numerous Tamil and Sinhala principalities scattered over the island.

Many Indians think that we should be ever grateful to the handouts by their fascist goverment. These handouts come with a price ( valuable projects to be handed over to their financier Adani ), they want us to be a buffer towards Chinese expansion into their neigborhood. Gwadar Port in Pakistan is now almost a major Chinese naval base and Hambantota Port is already featuring a lot of Chinese naval and maritime activity. So this is not out of humanitarian grounds that the Indian hand outs must be seen.
