India have been fined 100 percent and Australia 80 percent of their match fees for slow over rates in the World Test Championship final, the International Cricket Council said Monday.

Indian batsman Shubman Gill was also docked 15 percent of his match fee for a social media outburst after he was controversially caught in the match at The Oval which India lost by 209 runs on Sunday.

The ICC said: “India were ruled to be five overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration while Australia were found to be four overs short.” India skipper Rohit Sharma and his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins “pled guilty and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for formal hearings”, it added.

There was controversy on day four when Gill was caught by Cameron Green, but doubts were raised over the validity of the all-rounder's low, one-handed grab.

TV official Richard Kettleborough ruled it out.

Replays indicated Green had his fingers under the ball, but Gill posted a less definitive still image of the catch on Twitter shortly after stumps -- accompanied by two magnifying glasses and a “face palm” emoji.

The ICC said Gill's reaction amounted to “public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match”.

One demerit point was added to Gill's disciplinary record. (AFP)

When both countries were fined amounting closer to 100%, in avarage, this match is illegal and need to replay the game.

Is stupidity entering the sphere of reasoning? Where are we heading?

Mahendra, how can the match be illegal, when it had taken the entire 5 days duration to complete same. Just bcoz the teams were fined for slow over-rate, you cannot call it illegal. That's stupidity, guess if India was victorious, you wudnt call it illegal

Both are slow over cheaters making game pathetic to watch Monday, 12 June 2023 03:06 PM

Both lots are worst of playing, making watching their pathetic slow bowling a misery to watch. They should be fined 200% of the the winnings teams fees to teach them lessons. Better if match was never played, instead of disgusting people who tune into watch good sportsmanship.

Mahendra Praba, how do you call it illegal? It has been played on almost all five days. The only exception would be it was a tensed battle for test supremacy. Even if it was a draw the fines would have been enforced on the wrongdoers.

Cricket is no more a gentleman's game and these days umpires are scared to give the right decision or to pull up a player for slow overate etc. lest he loses his job. England umpire Kettleborough's bold decision against Indian batsman Gill has created lots of controversy and imposing fines after the game is over is the the right way to go.
