The first installment of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan will be available in the next two weeks, Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya said.
Addressing the media, he said that this is a unique achievement for a country at a time when the country is facing a big financial crisis. (CPS)

Things will be the same as we have seen the disbursement of nearly 4 billion dollars from India months ago . This is 2.9 billion and it won’t make any difference in our cost of living standards

It is not appropriate for the Minister to make such political statement before the IMF Board approves the loan. He should say that they expect board approvals .

May the IMF heavens open up and shower us with unlimited Tithe Installments as it is our right of our 2500 year civilization to receive these installments so that the IMF, donor countries and other lenders will be pardoned by us and absolved of this wrongs

"He said that this is a unique achievement for a country"...... this is the mentality of our rulers, so how the country get developed?

Are you asking votes because of this ...all damages have been done and it is very much clear you use this economic crisis for your political needs ..what a shame? While people are dying you play politics with this
Sunil Tuesday, 07 March 2023 06:50 PM
What wishful thinking? Besides, we will get 1 billion dollars as the first tranche and nothing more for one year, which is just peanuts when considering our massive debt of $ 51 billion.
Daya Tuesday, 07 March 2023 07:38 PM
Wait for it. Cannot trust the politicians.

Let it come to believe. But don't think people will vote for you guys.

It is not an achievement to receive a bailout package from the IMF after the country went bankrupt and unable to pay the creditors as only two years ago it was a developing country on the cusp of achieving middle-developing country status but the country is now on the verge of categorized as one of the poorest countries in the world on par with countries like Suriname and Zimbabwe.

Yes we are getting the IMF assistance after the Sri Lankan population has made major sacrifices -Higher income taxes, Higher Indirect taxes,Higher Electricity charges,Higher water charges,No salary increases, Higher food costs,Higher Fuel Costs, Power cuts, loss of love ones and talent to migration, loss of livlihoods, lack of medicines in government hospitals and the need to buy from pharmacies and much more pain and misery
Misery of the poor Wednesday, 08 March 2023 06:51 AM
Every announcement like this is bad news for the opposition, because they want to thrive in the misery of the people. Any good news is bad for them, even if it is good for the nation and people. Read the news papers to know the bad news about misery of the poor, never seen before.

You and your president are always chanting "IMF" "IMF" . Do you think 2.9 billion dollars is going to bring milk and honey to this country. it is only opening the way for more borrowings.
S.Siva Wednesday, 08 March 2023 09:12 AM
It looks like the politicos have already committed the money even before it's approved. If We are doing things right in Sri Lanka these loan astrologers should be first asked to give up their jobs or be fired from their jobs

Will the first installment be enough to pay India and Bangladesh? It is obvious, without the IMF deal, the government could not have forced the changes to income tax of the utility tariffs. Elecricity and water bills have started arriving. There is SSC levy added to the bills.
