Four people were killed and another four injured following an accident in the Tambuttegama police area this morning, Police said.

They said a van travelling from Kurunegala to Anuradhapura had crashed onto a truck that was about to park on the side of the road while it was driving in the same direction.

The van hit the back of the truck. Eight people in the van were admitted to the Tambuttegama hospital with injuries, and later four of them (two women (36, 43) and two men (26, 46)) died.

Another 55-year-old person, two boys aged 11 and 6, and an eight-year-old girl were among the injured.

Police investigations revealed that the high-speed and reckless driving of the van caused the accident.

The driver of the truck was arrested by the Tambuttegama police in connection with the accident. (DSB)

IT IS HIGH TIME THAT AUTHORITIES KEPT AN EYE ON CARELESS AND DRUNKEN DRIVERS.

    DOT Friday, 04 August 2023 08:12 AM

A significant number of dawn time accidents reports! Requires some special attention on this regard.

Really sad, people are seemed be in a big hurry to get to from one place to another. An interesting slogan on the back of a three wheeler says the following “ start early, drive slowly and arrive safely” Driving fast or within the allowed speed limits does not make a big difference when you arrive at the destination.

Sri lankan people are the worst drivers in the world. Until they are taught how to actually drive this will continue

Minister of transport is sleeping . So many accidents these days. The police is only punishing innocent for minor traffic offences , bus drivers are allowed to go scot free . No law and order on the roads.

Unfortunately, as per SL laws the lorry driver gets arrested. If the van was driven recklessly nobody else can be prosecuted.

Early morning accidents are becoming increasingly common. Sleepy Drivers ?

Thomas Dharmachandra Friday, 04 August 2023 09:45 AM

Why arrest the Driver of the truck, for the carelessness of the Van driver, which caused the accident?

    Lankan Friday, 04 August 2023 09:58 AM

Educate them before you give them licences . Health and safety education is important. Fire the ministry of transport and suck him now . He is sleeping while all this take place ? No any policy changes at all

Mike Jeya Friday, 04 August 2023 10:46 AM

Why is the truck driver arrested when the Van driver drove recklessly and smashed into the truck?

Great job by the dead van driver to put all of his and his passenger problems to rest. 'Rest with a loud bang' is the new trend. A country would be better off without these stupid people. Be happy that the scum is slowly fading away.

    Truth Friday, 04 August 2023 11:31 AM

Sad. One needs more sense than skill to drive on the public roads. Driving classes are not needed to handle the steering and auto gears. It can be learnt with the Dodgem cars in an amusement park.

Police should conduct a full investigation without absolving the driver of the long container giving the cause of death due to the reckless driviing of the van. The law very clearly says that when a large container intends parking on the roadway it has to have highly powered lights on the front side, side ways, rear etc. Did the Police check whether the container parked on the roadway had sufficient highly powered lights to show that vehicles coming from behind and complied to the law since the accident has taken place at the breaking of dawn. Especially containers invariably do not have bright lights which should be displayed as there is a possibility that vehicles from behind will not see until the respective vehicle approaches the parked vehicle. Also there is a possibility for a half baked investigation since there were no adult survivors and the best way to close the case is putting the whole blame on the driver of the van.

I think the van engines and wheels should be well maintained checked for necessary parametes e.g. wheel balancing, tuning etc .periodically .

Karalasingam Sivalingam Friday, 04 August 2023 01:19 PM

In every road there's reckless driving, specially during nonpeak hours. In the mornings prior to 6.30 a.m, vehicles driven at high speeds, specially school vans to reach schools before 7.00 p.m

Tissa Fernando Friday, 04 August 2023 04:47 PM

Probable causes of the accident: 1. Van driver driving too fast 2. Van driver not maintaining safe distance from the the truck 3. Van driver not paying attention may be he was sleepy 4. Truck may have been speeding too and might have stopped without any signal . Most if the accidents in Sri Lanka are avoidable. It is mainly the attitude that makes one a bad driver. Most Sri Lankans have the overtaking mentality. They are in a hurry on the road but not in a hurry in their jobs. When they do their normal jobs they are very relaxed and slow.

Minister Alagiyawanna should take full responsibility and resign for not implementing a requirement to install speed control units in all buses and lorries. This is a simple device that will not allow the drivers to exceed a particular speed.

Sure VIASL will import some more vehicles like these. No Policy on Safety, Technology or Customer Protection for the Motor Industry.

Road user Saturday, 05 August 2023 12:19 PM

Any parked vehicle on the main road should have hazard warning light switched on either day or night. This should be made compulsory.
