Graduate teacher candidates were told not to attend extra tuition classes and prepare for the teacher exam, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

While addressing an event held at the Ministry today, he said the wider educational transformation process that goes beyond the education reform, does not hope to produce a group of people who memorize everything taught and write answers in the examination papers.

He said this while commenting on an advertisement published that tutorial lessons are conducted aiming at the candidates who are appearing for the graduate teacher examination to be held in March this year.

"Undergraduate students who aspire to be teachers should be able to think, understand and grasp something quickly, such as solving a simple math problem and answering a general question."

A group of people who seek assistance in extra classes and sit for the teacher recruitment Examinations will not contribute to enhance the  skills of the children.

"Events such as these underscore the need for a comprehensive educational transformation process," the minister reiterated.

He also said that this is not a tough and competitive exam. The examination to be conducted by the examination department for those who had got past the relevant age limit and are expected to join as teachers among the graduates working in the government service as development officers.

Therefore, the minister said that he expects that the candidates will go to the exam hall on the scheduled date and face the test with self belief and confidence without attending tuition classes. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Yeah right. Who will come to a profession with zero promotions and a salary of 40,000 ? Quite sure not the ones who can think and do maths.

In Britain the government schools are obsessed about teacher training for graduate teachers where you can find history graduates trained to become maths teachers or psychology graduates given training to become Physics teachers. But in the British Private schools where the rich and the powerful send their sons and daughters for “solid education”, teacher training is discouraged totally , private schools hire graduates straight from the universities and allow them to teach only in the subjects they have got their degrees on. If you look at the website of the British private schools 99% of the teachers DO NOT have teacher training at all, emphasise is given only on their university degrees and the type of universities they studied.

Some are born teacher with natural talent to teach..Teaching is a unique arts ...out of 100 graduates you can select 10-15 good teachers...copy cutting and dictating is a big issue in schools and universities in Sri Lanka ...go and see how some lecturers teach in some of our universities .. PGCE and similar teacher training courses are good for Sri Lankan graduates ..I think we must have some good teacher training courses for all graduates to measure how they teach and what they teach...New Teaching methods and methodologies must be introduced

Simple solution is to design your exams in such a way that candidates cannot pass the exams by simply attending classes and memorising things!
