From next week, it will be mandatory for all government officers to report to work according to the recommended dress code as per the institution's policies, the Public Administration Ministry said.

Provincial Councils and Local Government State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said the circular in this regard will be issued soon.

In a statement to the media, he stated that prior to the COVID pandemic, separate circulars were issued for government officers mentioning the appropriate dress code to report to work as a policy decision.

As a result, the Ministry will modify the issued circular mentioning the approved dress code for government officers.

According to the circular issued after the pandemic situation, approval had been granted for state employees to report to workplaces with an appropriate dress code.

However, the Public Administration Ministry Secretary mentioned that the current circular was not applicable to schools.

The proposal in this regard will be presented to the cabinet meeting to bring the dress code policies into effect as they were before the COVID pandemic, the state minister said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

A nanny State. Does a country really have to tell it's people what to dress for work? SL treats women very badly and, like second class citizens. What's wrong with SL women use trousers, frocks, skirts etc. Why do these morons ask them to wear sarees. Travelling to work in crowded buses and taking time to wrap this damned thing around their body every day must be a nightmare. Why do we issue these useless instructions? Has any of these stupid politicians and harlf brainy public servants gone to at least one of the progressive countries in the world and see how women live?

Typical Sri Lankan. In this country it is still appearances that count, not brain and qualifications. In developed countries, as long as government officers do not been provided with uniforms or protective clothing, they have to show up for duty only in clean clothes, which is normal. If the SL government demands a certain type of clothing from its officers, then this must also be provided free of charge. In Germany, police detectives, who are not told what kind of clothing to wear, even get a monthly allowance for clothing.

This is the most important thing for a nation who are fighting to have a one square meal a day .

    Ram Saturday, 26 November 2022 05:54 PM

This was there years back and gradually disappeared. We do not want boru show. What we want is for the cost of living to come down

First provide the nation the necessities.

    Sam Saturday, 26 November 2022 07:42 PM

Before a dress code instill in them a loyalty and dedication in doing their jobs.

Namal Rajapakse Sunday, 27 November 2022 02:24 AM

Save sri lankas environment and foreign exchange. All public servants including all politicians and the Rajapaksaes should henceforth report to work in an Amuday. Less cloth, less washing, cheaper and prevents politicians from hiding anything on ther person.

    Easwaran Sunday, 27 November 2022 05:56 AM

Its clear that the ministers do not know what they aŕe supposd to do. They want to do something to show that they are doing something. Very poor show.

    Citizen G Sunday, 27 November 2022 07:12 AM

This is a good move as some government workers wear very inappropriate clothes. How come wildlife rangers wearing business shirts and trousers with polished shoes where as they should be wearing khaki shorts (tropical climate) and shirts with safety shoes making them ready for action. There were crocodiles reported in Wellawatta canal , has anyone seen rangers there? Perhaps they were there with polished shoes. Same with government labourers! They should be made to dress appropriately!!

    Disgusted Sunday, 27 November 2022 09:42 AM

This is ridiculous. Why on the earth men worry about women's clothing. This happened after some teachers stopped wearing sarees. If these men like sarees so much they should come to work wearing sarees. State Minister Janaka, please wear a saree before ordering others to do so.

Exhibition of lack of ideas in SL. The very reason for where SL in after 74 years. Rulers can only think (brain) or work (vision) at this low level. Even that also, they do not get it right. Dress code, uniform, workwear, and PPE all are all over the place!!!

    Terrence K Sunday, 27 November 2022 08:41 PM

@disgusted your comment itself is disgusting as you have not been properly disciplined. A dress code is necessary and those who cannot follow the dress code can opt out. These basic requirements starts from the time any person is admitted to school. Also my question is whether you will go for a function like a wedding in a span cloth ? When you are well dressed you are giving value to that organization and the clientele who patronize these organizations respect the professionalism extended by these entities and the team. As the saying goes there is a right place , right time for everything so do not belittle the policies which have been time tested. This country has got into the doldrums because of idiots like you.

Ranil is very bad Sunday, 27 November 2022 10:00 PM

I don't like Ranil and his Government and I don't like the way he is governing. This problem never arose when Mahinda was in power, when Gota was in power, even when Maithri was in power. Whatever said about them, they did not mess around the dress of ladies. Ranil is very bad.

Hungalle Palanganath Monday, 28 November 2022 02:25 AM

I think, it is better for all government officers and workers to wear WHITE cloths to hide the BLACK inside!! Even the police, Army and others must follow this trend! No more tie and coat in the parliament - White Amuda or Bikini are allowed!!

Moh Sleiman Monday, 28 November 2022 05:16 AM

What a Damn joke the population is starving,These Morons are worried about dress codes for women,Check the MEN comming to work without undies for a quicky,PLease Minister do something better for the Country to survive.Where is RANIL?Is he watching all this CRAP?

Overseas eye Monday, 28 November 2022 12:04 PM

The government is initiating yet another racialism in the name of mandatory dress code. Getting ready for another election.....only way to win the election by the ruling party is by creating racialism and unrest among the public. Hope our general public will not get into this trap.

    Disgusted Monday, 28 November 2022 03:12 PM

@Terrence K Oh dear, you seemed to have a such strong opinion on this. Perhaps you are someone who is too used to Saree and scared you have to wear something else? I am not saying there shouldn't be a dress code. I am saying that women should decide their own affairs and that perhaps saree is too outdated and too expensive in the current situation. There are lot of appropriate and decent cloths which are also less expensive. Besides, I think there should be a choice. After all, I don't see men coming to work wearing national dress.
