State-owned Channel Eye had been secretly sold to VIS Broadcasting (Pvt.) Ltd. for Rs 250 million per month effective for six months from June 30, National People’s Power (NPP) alleged yesterday.

NPP politburo member Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told a news conference that the airtime of Channel Eye had been sold without any transparency and that the Minister of Mass Media had submitted a Cabinet Paper yesterday after the Rupavahini employees and people who were aware of the deal objected to it.

He said, however, the Cabinet had not granted approval to the said Cabinet Paper.

“Plans are afoot to use Channel Eye to telecast programmes of the SBT channel of VIS Broadcasting. this channel is owned by Lycamobile. Minister Bandula Gunawardena and the President were planning to transfer the ownership of Channel Eye for six months and then extend it to two years,” he said.

Dr. Jayatissa said the Cabinet Paper had been brought in to justify the transaction after completing the whole process involving the transaction on June 30 and the transaction being effective from July 1.

He said the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna was against this move and that the people too must come forward against such a move.(Ajith Siriwardana)

how come sold if it is only 6 months? stop fear-mongering. Better sell everything to private than run on loss.

So how long the public watch all these underhand happening and be silent. This the wealth of the country that is being sold at their will. The public gave them a mandate of 5 years to rule the country and not sell parts of it to their whims and fancies.

Whole country already sold by the Mahinda Chinthanaya an its extended versions: Yahapalanaya and Ashcharyaya. JVP cofounded Mahinda Chinthanaya and Yahapalanaya. Raise the frock and protest.

State owned Media is nothing but a mouth piece for the government in power. All the Henchmen get jobs here. Used have great programs, but systematically they have degraded the quality of programming. How long can the people fund this debacle. The NPP should stop playing the role of moaning mini. Your communist ideologies are long dead.

So many secret deals have taken place recently, this was revealed by one of my best friend working for the Parliament. This is one of it. Thanks Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa for bringing this matter to the light.

Now all the Cabinet Ministers are up to Commissions as they know only for few months there are going to be on their chairs. Bandula Gunawardene is not exemptional, this may be his final bulk commission.

Frustrated tax payer Tuesday, 15 August 2023 09:41 AM

Sell these loss making SOEs in any manner as we are paying for these losses from our salary at the end of the month as taxes.

First of all, it's not a sale, if this guy's information is to be believed. It's being arranged to be given on monthly rent of 250 million for six months, according to him. It's best to earn like this since the eye channel is an asset just idling; no viewers, no advertising income

How can ownership of a company can be transferred for only six months and again for two more years? JVP has never heard something called leasing

Common man Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:23 AM

Ha ha. Sahodharaya doesn't know the difference between a rent/ lease and a sale. He will agree for anything that is from China only!

    Roman Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:27 AM

Is it even worth 250 mil a month ? I would take the deal

    Imtias Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:58 AM

The state owned Rupavahini is sufficient to air state affairs. Why do we need more. Yes sell the rest and get the money to government coffers. Let them mange and do something good.
