The Ministry of Finance ordered an urgent report from the Department of Excise on several alarming issues pertaining to the alcohol industry and its taxation including artificially produced toddy entering the country’s liquor production process.

The issues were transpired at a special meeting held between the State Minister of Finance, the Excise Chief and the liquor license holders association.

Certain liquor manufacturers using adulterated or artificially developed toddy for their arrack production has been discussed in the depth at the meeting and the minister inquired about the background of this problem.

The Excise officials explained that less than one third of the daily toddy requirement is met currently and many toddy suppliers try to adulterate their stocks with various chemicals.

The local liquor industry requires about 160, 000 liters of toddy per day but only 45, 000 liters of natural toddy could be supplied for a day. Because of this shortage the toddy suppliers tend to multiply their stocks by including various chemicals to enhance the supply.

State Minister of Finance Ranjith Siyambalapitiya instructed Excise Commissioner General M. J. Gunasiri to submit a report within a month regarding this issue.

The officials also discussed how certain liquor license holders violate their permit conditions by putting up liquor selling outlets wherever they please. It has also been discussed how certain large scale liquor manufacturers are running their own sales outlets and how they evade paying state taxes of the industry. (Kurulu Koojana Kariyakarawana)

This has been there for years, Sunday Times paper some time back published a detailed report and in that they said mostly breweries of politicians and their affiliates were involved in this. Ultimately the consumer is the one who becomes the victim and no government can stop this as perpetrators are the ones who makes the laws in our country.

News presented very confusingly. The main issue is the dangers attached to adding chemicals to make up for toddy shortages. The government has to take very drastic action to stop this happening ever. All other issues like tax evasions and unauthorised sales outlets are of secondary concerns .

It is absolutely true that the certain racketeers are manufacturing and distributing the artificial toddy to the human consumption which is mixed with various toxic substances. Even in the areas like Panadura Wadduwa and Payagala where the toddy toddy tapping is more frequent can be found the artificial toddy.Instead of tapping the coconut blossom, some people use the yeast sugar and certain ingredients for the fermentation process. Even the some excise officers are aiding and abetting them
