The case filed against former IGP Pujith Jayasundara for allegedly committing an offence of criminal intimidation against the elevator operator at the Police Headquarters in 2017, has been fixed for further trial by Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

When the matter came up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, two witnesses including a receptionist at the police headquarters gave evidence. The witnesses admitted the fact that the former IGP Jayasundara had given instructions not to operate the elevator when the national anthem was being sung and meditation programs were being held.

Further magisterial inquiry fixed for August 23.

The complainant, the lift number one operator at the Police Headquarters, lodged a complaint on June 2, 2019 with then Acting IGP alleging that then IGP Pujith Jayasundera on April 11, 2017 scolded in foul language and grabbed him by the collar and attempted to assault him inside the elevator. Is the operator still alive? 6 years have gone by

This fellow was behaving like a maniac while he was the IGP and making a fool of himself. He has got, at least in part, what he justly deserved.

The delay in the complaint speaks volumes that their is a hand behind the scene who wants to take revenge. I saw the video. IGP acted in excess of his authority but this is not a matter where he should have been charged. This is a matter for Conciliation boards

This prosecution would have been unthinkable if the former IGP had not fallen from grace. Now he is a dead duck more people would be coming out of the woodwork claiming wrong doing by the Ex-IGP. Policemen beating civilians in police stations all over the country is a daily event and none of them ever get questioned let alone prosecuted. A Tamil MP was arrested for verbally challenging two unknown plain clothes individuals, appearing from nowhere and claiming to be policemen but refusing to show the ID and strangely claiming to have orders to take over the MP’s personal security. In this cultural context of ghastly police behaviour with impunity it is LAUGHABLE this Ex-IGP is being prosecuted for a trivial offence.

why do you call it alleged threat? It was a real threat, which is very evident from the video

Enforcing every law to the hilt without favouritism or discretion is the policy in the Western countries and what that has produced is a neurotic society with individuality lost and replaced with abstract codes and numbers. Even though Sri Lanka inherited the law from the European occupiers, Sri Lankan strong culture and common sense should reflect in all prosecutions and judicial rulings.

This seems most probably politically or internal officials motivated case. And also this shouldn't be at court. They could have done internal investigation within Police department or police commission. IGP is the head of department and if this was a genuine threat like that he would have done something different and IGP could sack him. seems elevator operator seems acted here some to fulfill someone else needs. I think our court will give their judgement independently and impartially here.
