Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera was appointed new Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy after Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne relinquished command of the Sri Lanka Navy on completion of his tenure today.
Admiral Ulugetenne assumed office as the 24th Commander of the Navy on 15th July 2020.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, promoted Nishantha Ulugetenne to the rank of Admiral on Saturday (December 17).
he outgoing Commander handed over duties of the command to his successor Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera at the Commander’s office in the Navy Headquarters before his departure.
Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne rendered a distinguished service to the Navy and motherland during his naval career spanning over 37 years.
The retiring senior officer was accorded a Guard of Honour in accordance with naval traditions.
After the Board of Management and senior naval officers made their formal farewells, senior and junior sailors making a street line bade farewell to Admiral Ulugetenne who was sent off mounted on a decorated vehicle, amidst cheers.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

Who pays for these promotions and additional privileges even after retirement ? - with Tax payers money ?? This is a bankrupt country and we as citizens cannot afford any of this !!

Good question. The reporters should ask such questions without blindly reporting an event. It will also be good to know what the Admiral did in the 18 months to deserve the promotion.

How many Admirals are there for a small fleet of fishing boats. Aren't they ashamed of these titles? It is similar to the 'Field Marshall'. What a jocular country.

Gotabaya during his time was noted for according frequent promotions across the board for all in the armed forces. That was to keep them happy and ensure their support during his Presidency. The Commander in Chief wins the appreciation and not bothered about the additional expenses to the Treasury as it is eventually the Taxpayer who meets them.
