A 23-year-old woman who was charged with causing damage to the Mirror Wall at Sigiriya was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Dambulla Magistrate Sanjeewa Ramyakumara today.

The woman, a resident of Batticaloa, had visited Sigiriya along with some friends and scribbled her name on the Mirror Wall using a hairpin.

Police said Archaeological Department officials had apprehended her as she was writing her name (Udaya), in English, on the wall.

They had handed her over to the Sigiriya Police,

The Archaeological Department had reported that the damage could not be repaired. (Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa)

The most outrageous part is these shameful commentators like Sisira here coming to rescue of a person who have done a irreparable damage to a national treasure of this country. This should be a lesson for all out there doing these things without thinking through.

Archaeology Department must distribute pamphlets and place boards in all three languages advising the visitors how to conduct themselves when they visit and also arrange a guard to each 25 odd visitors for which payment could be harnessed through ticket price. It is not the first time this happened.
