The JHU General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka addressing a media briefing said that the JHU managed to muster 9 lakhs of new votes to President Maithripala Sirisena from the Sinhala Buddhist areas at the January 8th polls.

The ex-minister made this remark comparing the outcome of presidential poll with that of 2010 in which the JHU backed Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He added that despite a massive campaign by the ex-President’s team to ‘mislead the Sinhala voters’ the educated Sinhala voters had come in their hundreds of thousands to back Maithripala.

‘Our presence in the alliance for common candidate made the Sinhala voter confident that their aspirations and rights would always be protected under the Presidency of Maithripala Sirisena’ he observed.

Minister also thanked the IGP and the Elections Commissioner for thwarting what he termed a mass attempt to rig the election by using the military.

Yes, you are correct. Besides Champika should not try to claim sole credit for this as other parties, including many SLFPers, too campaigned for Maitri. i.e. many SLFP votes came to him. Also, now JHU should not descend to this low level of being self-important at a time we all look forward to a much more gentlemanly political culture without all the corruption and point scoring.

This is a over statement. When one compares his earlier statement that Tamils/Muslims delivered only 12% of the votes polled by the new president, I believe he is trying to say their votes were higher than Tamils/Muslims contribution for the victory. This is very cheap politics.JHU will be exposed if they contest parliament elections independently.

The two biggest minorities in Sri Lanka - Tamils and Muslims - voted for Mr Sirisena in large numbers, and made him to the New Preisent. Their vote was more anti-Rajapaksa than pro-Sirisena.

I understand that at this moment many people of Sri Lanka, who were against the past regime for various reasons(and rightly so!) will be so happy and full of hopes of the change and new government. As usual, all political parties and various people who are in the wining side now will feel and try to justify their contribution to the win. However if you analyse ANY past election in Sri Lanka objectively, ONE FACT is prominent. Before OR after and elction when the governments were formed, majority sinhalese governments always have make alliances with minority tamil parties and other groups. Ex. Dudley-Chelvanayagam in 1965, United Front in 1970, JR-thondaman in 1977 and so on. Those early days, Muslims were happy to vote in the lines of political division rather than the racial division. After Ashrof that was changed too. So that in recent elections, whether they are Presidential or otherwise, UNLESS the major Sinhalese party has the support of major Tamil and Muslim parties, gaining island wide majority is IMPOSSIBLE. That is the plain truth.

It is the common Sinhala man who has sense and who wanted to stand against corruption even if it is done by the BEST PRESIDENT EVER THIS LAND HAD made the difference.
