Unruly behaviour: Police warn big-match revellers

Big match revelry in Kandy Town came to an end with the police today taking into custody several people including some 50 students who were found driving their vehicles and sports go-carts in a reckless manner causing severe obstructions to the normal flow of traffic.

Sources said the big match between the two leading Kandy Schools -- St Anthony’s and the Trinity was an excuse for students and well-wishers to run riot in the Kandy Town. Some of the students and the well-wishers, several without driving licences, had driven the cars and vans in a manner that posed a danger to other road users.

The police said most of these taken into custody, except for four of them, were severely warned and released. Those further will be charged in court for reckless driving.

Seven luxury vehicles taken into custody were also released on police bail.

Kandy SSP Gamini Ellepola directed the special operation to arrest the unruly students and take their vehicles into custody. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe)

What about warning VIP convoys who also drive recklessly and are a danger to others. The school boys only do it once a year but we put up with the dangerous convoys on a daily basis.

How do you therefore explain the car crash that I witnessed between a yellow sports car and a 4x4 with Thomas flags on Gregorys road this week?

Also the students climbing on peoples cars and tuk tuks damaging peoples property?

And the bill that your principal has received this week to account for the damage caused?

And the number of students arrested this week?

Well done, A few so called super rich class children adopt to these high handed acts. Police should be strict and also not allow the general public to be disturbed. Cheering should be allowed only in the grounds. In good old days that was the theme.

Police open their eyes and impose these rules only after the Royal-Thomian match. Only they can plat havoc. After that only the rules are imposed for the other big matches.

This is because everyone is encouraging this "behaviour" just because it is the big match. Then everyone is upset about the unruliness. Give them an inch they take it to the max!
