Several MPs in the United National Party (UNP) including Ranjan Ramanayake have volunteered to contest as Chief Ministerial candidates at the next Provincial Council elections.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told journalists that a number of party seniors had expressed their willingness to contest the elections.
Mr. Attanayake said the party was grateful to those MPs including Mr. Ramanayake who had come forward in a bold manner. “We have decided to field some popular figures as candidates,” he added.
The UNP General Secretary also said several Provincial Council members of the UPFA would join the UNP after the nominations were handed over. He said a VIP family from the South would also cross over to the party around that time. (Yohan Perera and Lahiru Pothmulla)
