The United National Party (UNP) today suspended the membership of Kalutara district parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma and sent him a show cause on his behavior during Wednesday’s group meeting at the Parliamentary complex.
“Yes, the party has suspended Mr. Thewarapperuma’s membership and sent him a show cause letter why he should not be expelled from the party. He has been given two weeks to submit his reply,” UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka said today.
Mr. Attanayaka said he acted on a report forwarded by Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga to the party on the incident.
Mr. Thewarapperuma has been accused of being under the influence of liquor when participating in the UNP parliamentary group meeting and had attempted to assault party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe after making derogatory remarks against him. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
