UNP has no authority to decide on election: JHU

Commenting on the United National Party (UNP) decision to go for General Elections after April 23, JHU National Organiser Nishantha Warnasinghe today said it was only the President or the party with the majority in the Parliament that could decide on the election.

“The UNP Working Committee has no authority to decide on holding an election. Either the President or the Political party that represents the majority in the parliament could decide on that,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)

Correct, UNP has no authority to hold elections without consulting the other co-parties supported them. Most important, the existing Govt. should punish all the culprits on the previous Govt. If not, every efforts will go in vain.

RW is behaving like the President of this country. He has absolutely no right to decide on dissolving Parliament. He can only resign from the post of Prime Minister. MR has then the power to do so.

JHU had drastically eroded its voter base after it had been proved their cry for change had any meaning but supporting the UNP project.JHU is now looking for a way out to increase some votes to secure their MP slots in the coming election.This statement is nothing but a propaganda gimmick

The JHU never backed the UNP. They backed the common candidate. I voted for the "Swan" and hope to vote for the "Swan" at the next general elections. By the way, I classify myself as a floating voter or put in another way, "see wrong things wrong and the good things good".

The members of parliment are at a stalemate. A new mandate for parliment is needed. Pension or not an immidiate election is needed. It will therefore take place under the previous rules. An act for transperency of campaign funds is a must. If parliment prevents this The President should appoint a Commision to give a immidiate report so that he can oversee funds spent for campaogning.
