Video: UNHRC to be used as publicity stunt: JVP

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today alleged that a publicity stunt had been planned by the ruling UPFA to get political advantage at the coming Provincial Council elections using the resolution on Sri Lanka that is to be taken up United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on the eve of the Provincial Council elections.

JVP Member of Parliament Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference today that this had been planned despite there being no legal provision for any country to take Sri Lanka to International Criminal Courts.

“No country could take Sri Lanka to any international courts as she is not a signatory of the Rome Convention under which the International Criminal Courts was set up,” he said.

At the same time he said it was the Sri Lankan government that had no resources to counter such a resolution as a result of the absence of qualified diplomats to handle the situation. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)
