SL woman arrested with foreign currency



A 35-year-old Sri Lankan woman was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night while attempting to smuggle in foreign currency worth Rs.5,090,666 concealed in her hand bag, Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

He said the woman was carrying 16,444 Euro and 16,000 US dollars which were found inside a false bottom of her hand bag.

The woman had arrived from Chennai. Preliminary investigations had revealed that she was a frequent traveller to India and had travelled to India on four occasions in the past two weeks.  

The Customs confiscated the foreign currency and imposed a penalty of Rs.100,000. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
