A 35-year-old Sri Lankan woman was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night while attempting to smuggle in foreign currency worth Rs.5,090,666 concealed in her hand bag, Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

He said the woman was carrying 16,444 Euro and 16,000 US dollars which were found inside a false bottom of her hand bag.

The woman had arrived from Chennai. Preliminary investigations had revealed that she was a frequent traveller to India and had travelled to India on four occasions in the past two weeks.

The Customs confiscated the foreign currency and imposed a penalty of Rs.100,000. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Why do the Sri Lankan airport custom officers nod and smile at the traders(goods carriers) who constantly travel in and out of Singapore?? The customs turn a blind eye as these traders bring in bottles and bottles of duty free liquor also!!!!

Customs are crooks and they confesticate money of traders and charge money. People who sell property how are they supposed to take money out of the country. Central Bank Says Sri Lankan Rupees is free floating but is it true. This is nothing but lies of Central Bank and crimilaizing people who want to make a living. In this country people cannot earn honest living but crooks of customs have large houses with millionare facilities.

Very true. Non citizen of SL who sells his property and who wants to take the money out of the country has so much red tape and make it hell for that person.

Woman was stupid.If she was bringing in Foreign currency into the country she simply could have declared same on arrival.Dont believe there is a limit one could bring in Foreign currency as long as it is declared
