The Ministry of Wildlife Resources Conservation has decided to issue a special identity card for the country’s Gypsies, enabling to carry out their traditional and cultural activities without any hindrance, Ministry sources said today.
Minister Vijith Wijayamuni Zoysa said the issuance of a separate identity card for the Gypsies, (the majority of whom were Telugu-speaking) would facilitate the performance of their day-to-day activities in accordance with their cultural norms.
The Minister further said this would also enable them to keep their animals in their possession without any hindrance.
He added that members of the Gypsy tribe could send in their applications to the Wildlife Resources Conservation Ministry in order to receive this special identity card.
The programme was initiated under the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, following a meeting with the country’s Gypsies at the Ministry recently, he stated. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
