While criticizing the proposed resolutions on war crime allegations against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC session in Geneva, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today that some countries are trying to intervene in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs, using northern Tamils as a shield.

“All the citizens now enjoy complete freedom, but some countries are trying to interfere in the country’s affairs, using northern Tamils - who are also enjoying the freedom - as a shield,” the President told in his speech at the 66th Independence Day ceremony in Kegalle today.

He also said that the proposed resolutions could be defined as a victorious act of those against peace and harmony.

“The attempts of war crime allegations against the country are a victory of those don’t like peace. These resolutions are not based on peace or equality. It is an attempt of frightening the nations that promote peace, integrity and sovereignty,” the President said.

He said the war crime allegations had been based on the details provided by those in favour of separatism.

President Rajapaksa said the powerful countries should realize the difficulty in defeating terrorism.

“Powerful countries should realize the difficulty in defeating terrorism. The challenge we faced was more severe than any challenges that the powerful countries are facing,” he said.

He also said powerful countries took 50 to 100 years to establish reconciliation in those countries after civil wars. “But we have achieved much in four years’ time after ending the war,” he said.
