A Sri Lankan with Australian citizenship was on Wednesday arrested for using a satellite telephone prohibited in India.

Sources said A Ramachandran (39) of Oorani Kadu near Vavattithurai in Sri Lanka, came to Theneerpatti here for establishing a poultry farm. It is said that his ancestors belonged to Ramanathapuram and so he had obtained Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI). Ramachandran purchased land at Theneerpatti and engaged in setting up of the farm.

On Wednesday, based on a tip-off, a team of Q-branch police led by inspector Rangasamy arrested him for using a satellite telephone at Asoor Road here. The police booked him under Indian Wireless Telegraphy act 1933 section 6 (1A) (Possessing wireless or satellite apparatus). Subsequently, he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court VI and the Magistrate Nagalakshmi remanded him in judicial custody till February 6.

Sources said Ramachandran confessed that he possessed the instrument. Satellite phones transmit information keeping the identity of the owner secret and no information can be tracked about the owner. During the probe, the sleuths could not find any call history on the phone and Ramachandran confessed that he had not contacted anyone since he began his stay in India. (Source: Indian Express)
