Lankan gets 7-year jail in robbery case

The Second Additional Assistant Sessions Court here on Monday convicted and sentenced a Sri Lankan Tamil to undergo seven-year imprisonment for robbed woman of a gold chain after attacking her in April 2013.

Pronouncing the verdict, the Second Additional Assistant Sessions Judge Vijayakumar imposed fine of Rs. 1,000 on Bala Prasanna.

According to the prosecution, Bala Prasannan, who resided near the house of C. Sivakami (38) in Karumandapam area, knew the woman’s husband Chandrasekhar, a supervisor in a hotel here.

When the woman was alone, Bala Prasanna allegedlywent to her house and attacked her with an iron road on her head and forehead and robbed gold chain weighing seven sovereigns from her and escaped.

Upon returning home in the afternoon, Chandrasekhar found his wife lying unconscious and admitted her to the hospital.

On a complaint from Chandrasekar, the Sessions Court Police booked a case against Bala Prasanna under IPC sections 392 (robbery) and 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt).

In all, 11 witnesses were examined by the prosecution during the course of the trial. (Source: The Hindu)

Why does it has to be SL Tamil? As a responsible media you should not generalised communities. If a sinhala person did this crime would you say SL Sinhalese gets 7 Year jail term? These are basic common sense to use as a responsible meedia personals.

I also felt the same way and opened this message to comment. However, Sampath has commented all what I thought. Still our medias separating Sihalese, Tamils and Muslims. Please in future do make any news items ethnically differentiating. In our last election people rejected this kind of people and we are now under a good governance. We all are Sri Lankan.

Reason to address the accused a Sri Lankan Tamil because of the fact that he is not a In dian Tamil. When addressing a Sinhalese it is not necessary to mention he is a Sri Lankan Sinhalese. Obviously, Sinhalese are descendants from Sri Lanka.

He is being addressed as a Sri Lankan Tamil mainly to offer accurate news to the public his identity and that he is not an Indian Tamil. As for a Sinhalese. it is well understood Sinhalese are descendants of Sri Lanka.
