SF meeting in Balapitiya disrupted by police

A tense situation arose at the Balapitiya town today when police attempted to stop a Democratic Party meeting held with the participation of its leader and former army commander Sarath Fonseka

This meeting organised by Balapitiya Democratic Party co organizers Mathalee Jayasekera and  P. Sagara  Ruwan Kumara  De Silva, was held behind the Balapitiya  public market on a makeshift platform  when the police intervened and attempted to stop the meeting for using loudspeakers without permission.

Organizer Sagara De Silva did not participate in the meeting since there was information about a plan to arrest him, sources said.

When Sarath Fonseka arrived at the location with Anoma Fonseka,  Ahungalla  OIC  A Mahinda informed him that the meting could not be allowed as a permit for the use of loudspeakers had not been obtained and also because the Balapitiya divisional secretary had objected to the use of the site for the meeting.

A tense situation arose as Sarath Fonseka began to address the meeting despite police objection.

However Elpitiya ASP Vijitha Ranabahu  and Ahungalla  OIC  W.A. Mahinda interrupted Fonseka’s  address.

Amidst supporters protesting the police move, Fonseka continued his speech on a megaphone.

He charged that the ruler of the country did not allow him to hold a meeting in his father’s home town and also took revenge from his family.

“Balapitiya is my father’s and grand father native village. It is not necessary to explain my connection with Balapitiya.”

“Prabhakaran had principles although he was dangerous and murderous. He did not take revenge from our families. Nor did he take revenge from our children. Literally, this ruler is not worth a hair of Prabhakaran,” he said addressing the gathering through the megaphone.

“I was the Chief of Defence Staff- in charge of the Police as well as the three Armed Forces. At that time, DIGs and IGPs who opened the doors of my vehicle. I was assigned 4000 police officers with two stars for my security.”

“You saw what happened here. The police have been given khaki uniforms, riot shields and batons to protect democracy and the general public; not to safeguard corrupt leaders and  carry out their  instructions.”

An anti riot squad had been deployed amid the exchange of words between the Police and the former army commander.

People alleged the government and parliamentarian Sajin vas Gunawardena had a hand behind the disruption of the meeting.
