Police sets up highway traffic squadron

A new highway traffic squadron to curb road accidents has been set up by the police with the recently purchased 279 high-speed motorbikes.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the personnel specially trained to use these motorbikes will work for 12 hours a day on a shift basis.

They would also help arrive at the crime scene in the shortest possible time and tracking down fleeing criminals.

Police said each motorbike has been placed at strategic locations to cover the main areas surrounding a town and its suburb.

The police are using these bikes to give chase to motorists who fail to obey police commands.

Each bike with a 600cc engine capacity was purchased from the Yamaha Motor Company of Japan. They were distributed among the main police stations and the main police divisions to increase the efficiency of the police. (Supun Dias)
