In the light of several suicides in recent times, Police have advised students and others to exercise caution and self-restraint when accessing the Facebook and uploading photographs to the social media network.
“There is nothing wrong in using Facebook. But users, especially school children should restrain themselves from using Facebook at least till they complete education or their examinations. The decision is up to the user,” police spokesman Ajith Rohana said.
He said Facebook users should think twice before uploading their private details.
“The contact numbers or photographs that a user posts on Facebook could be used by an unscrupulous viewer for derogatory or immoral purposes. Female Facebook users should be even more vigilant about this,” SSP Rohana said.
Although the negative consequences of using Facebook have not yet affected Sri Lankans unlike in other countries, he said the country might be affected in the future.
“Facebook should be used wisely, otherwise it will become a menace like in other countries,” SSP Rohana said
He said the action that could be taken by the Police Department was limited. (Sanath Desmond and Lahiru Pothmulla)

Sri lankan public, especially the kids are not savvy to the pitfalls in the IT highway..The parents had better educate their young ones, rather than taking it away from them totally. But the problem is that most of us parents too are at sea, when it comes to modern technology !
