ODI debacle: Sanath says the blame should be shared

UPFA MP and National Cricket Selection Committee Chairman Sanath Jayasuriya today said everyone concerned including himself should share the blame for Sri Lanka’s ODI debacle against India.

Speaking during the committee stage debate on the budget in Parliament, Mr. Jayasuriya said the decision to go on the tour to India was made after a discussion between himself as the chief selector, officials of Sri Lanka Cricket and captain Angelo Mathews, after receiving an invitation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India( BCCI).

He said the invitation was accepted as it was an opportunity to test new players. “We were able to give opportunities to a few pace bowlers,’ he said adding that this was not the first time that Sri Lanka had suffered such setbacks.

He said no one could charge that the players were not prepared for the series in India as many players were engaged in Mercantile Cricket while a few others included in the squad were playing against the West Indies A in Colombo when they left to India.

Further he denied that Sri Lanka Cricket had received funds from its Indian counterpart for the tour. (Yohan Perera and Kelum Bandara)
