There was no urgency to name a common Opposition candidate as the government was yet to declare a presidential election, said Opposition and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday.
Speaking at the UNP Bala Mandalaya meeting in Bandaragama yesterday, Mr. Wickremesinghe said there was no necessity to name a common candidate before the declaration of the presidential election.
He said the government had not decided on a date for the presidential election. He said this was evident from the different dates given by different ministers.
Mr. Wickremesinghe charged that the government intended to use religion to gain political mileage at the presidential election.
He said a future UNP government would bring about religious harmony by bringing in legislation to teach all religions in all schools.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said a future UNP government would be prepared to work with any religious leader to safeguard all religions. (Yohan Perera)
