Nelum Pokuna Mawatha, which runs from Horton Place Roundabout to Public Library Roundabout, is to be named Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha once again Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) sources said today.

The road was renamed Nelum Pokuna Mawatha in 2011 with the opening of the Nelum Pokuna Perfoming Arts Stadium.

Sources said the old name would be restored at a ceremony next week to which President Maithripala Sirisena is to participate as Chief Guest.

The source said there were no plans to rename the Nelum Pokuna Performing Arts Theatre.(YP)

Why did the former government of MR change the name from Ananda Coomaraswamy to Nelum Pokuna? They disrespected the yeomen service to Sinhalese art and culture contributed by Coomaraswamy.

Mr Ananda Coomaraswamy was a pioneer in introducing indian and srilankan art to the west. He contributed to the understanding of buddhist images and cultureHe also contributed to swadeshi movement.. Renaming the road is the right step in honouring such person as well us reminding the treasured past of ours.

It was a cardinal mistake to remove An and a Coomarasami name to Pokuna. Dr. Ananda C was a scholar and the pokuna in fact should have been named after him. At least now the mistake is corrected. via DM Android App
