In an outburst following a challenge to an open debate on UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake, the Mayor of Colombo A.J.M Muzzamil today said that Mr. Karunanayake’s actions over the years had been detrimental to the party.
“I feel that his behavior has been detrimental to the party as he acts for himself and not for the party. He has made statements against the Leadership Council and Nomination Board which he was a part. I will use the forum of a debate to expose what a regressive figure he has been to the party,” Muzzamil said.
In reply to queries whether such an outburst came as a result of his wife being denied a nomination, the Mayor said it had nothing to do with it.
‘It has nothing to do with that, but Karunanayake was instrumental in the rejection,” he said.
“He is the one who orchestrated that and wanted my wife out of the electoral running. However, that is a decision of the party and I respect it, but it shows how he held the party at ransom,” the Mayor said.
In response to these charges MP Ravi Karunanayake said that the Mayor’s track record ‘speaks for itself’ and said the Mayor’s action during his tenure had been detrimental to the party.
“His track record shows where his allegiance and loyalty has been. His service for the last two years has been a testament of this. He must not waste time on such unnecessary exercises and ensure that he does his job as a Councilor. By pulling such needless stunts he is merely telling people to vote for other parties,” Mr. Karunanayake said.
Expressing his views on his role in the Nomination Board Karunanayake said that there was no room for family allegiances within the UNP. He stated that he would comprehensively address these issues within a few days.
“He must remember that the UNP is not a party where the husband has one seat and the wife and children others. There is no room for family ties within the party,” he said.
“I will sufficiently address all of these issues in a few days as I cannot expend the time and energy to justify such baseless claims right now,” he said.
