More Tamils to be recruited to Army

Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya said that more Tamil nationals would be recruited to the Army based on their qualifications.

He said that Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has told the Army to look for Tamil nationals from North and Eastern Provinces.

“We have about two or three senior Brigadiers who are Tamils and currently serving in the Army, we do not have restrictions like that and we are in the process enrolling more of them in near future,” he said.

“More than us the police recruited hundreds of Tamils since the end of the war for police stations in the North and East,” he added.

Last November 103 Tamil girls were recruited to the Sri Lanka Army and were enlisted in the Volunteer Force of the Sri Lanka Army and assigned to serve under the 6th Battalion of the Sri Lanka Army Women's Corps.

After initial military training they were assigned to Killinochchi and Mullaitivu Districts and it is hoped that they will facilitate the ongoing military-civil cooperation activities in the areas.

They were recruited to the Army after facing an extensive interview which were conducted in the North and East.(Supun Dias)
