As the only living former President/Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, I felt the responsibility to speak out in order to resolve the prevalent religious tensions in the country, Former President Chandrika Bandaranike Kumaratunga said today.
Speaking to the media during the event held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute to present the recommendations on ‘Promoting Religious Harmony’ by the ‘Forum for Inter Faith Dialogue’ (FOIFD), Ms. Kumaratunga said, “I have remained silent for a long time because I get hammered by the government-run media whenever I make a comment on a current issue in the country, claiming that I have no right to do so. But I believe I have every reason to voice my concerns as I am a premier citizen of this country. So when I took up this cause I realised that most moderate Buddhists are frightened to talk due to fear of intimidations and the killings that are going on. . .”
She stated therefore she realised that she did not wish to remain silent anymore and hence, worked in collaboration with the South Asia Policy and Research Institute (SAPRI) to establish the ‘Forum on Inter Faith Dialogue’ (FOIFD).
Ms. Kumaratunga also stressed on the importance for the people to be aware of a moderate point of view. “The moderates at the start were very scared to express their thoughts but they are now beginning to be convinced of the need for another voice to reach the people. The masses have been concerned of the rumours that circulated on Muslims taking over Sri Lanka, their population increase etc. Although most didn’t wish to believe these claims, they did not hear any other view either,” she added.
Anunayake thero of Maha Vihara Vanshika Shiyampali Maha Nikaya Malwatta Chapter of Sri Lanka – Venerable Niyangoda Vijithasiri thera, The Anunayake Thero of the Amarapura Maha Nikaya – Venerable Kotugoda Dhammavasa thera, Colombo Archbishop Reverend Oswald Gomis, Moulavi M.R. Mahir and S. Kuhantha Sharma Swamy also spoke. (Lakna Paranamanna)

Although everything is not hunky-dory, sanity prevails here to a fair extent, after your era of mayhem and destruction. So, Ma'am, please leave us be, without trying to make this a scape goat to score political mileage.

Only way to salvage the unity of my beloved country is to roll back the clock and to recognize every ethnic group in the country as equal. Politicians being politicians , regardless of the country love to play race or ethnic card to win election ,and Sri Lanka is no exception. As a nation we cannot marginalize other member of our community based on their race or religion. We have some soul searching to do before it is too late and fall back into another dark chapter....

People do make mistakes. Realizing it and acting positively should be appriciated. No one is perfect. Remember when you lift your finger to some one automatically the other finger turns round you. Please do not hamper on the past. Today Sri Lanka has become the hub for drugs and many illegal things. We should remember we have a generation ahead and protect them.If not mother lanka will no more be a place of paradise. Look for the furture.

A lot of you have criticized her. It seems no one can point to facts. She held the country together and there was no major atrocity during here tenure. JR started the '83 riots and the beginning of the ruin, Preme topped it by killing innocent and poor youth whist true terrorists in the JVP fled or hid. In addition he supplied arms and money to the LTTE and got killed by the same. DB Wije had no clue. Chandrika lost an eye starting the process of eliminating the LTTE with Lakshman K et. al turning the world against the terrorists. Which finally worked for MR to finish the job. Rest is history. Until you people who criticize here loose at least a toe nail for this country, please keep your gobs shut. It will be the most valued contribution you could ever make for mother Lanka!

Its ironical how CBK is saying there is no freedom out there while she also acted with impunity and was pretty much aggressive against critics. How can one throw stones while living in a glass house? Its a shame that no one remember what this so called "stateswomen" did to our country. she curtailed media freedom, took our country to the depth of poverty.
Now she speaks cause her family has no say in politics ... shame shame shame

Thankfully there is still some statesmen and women left in this country who have a backbone strong enough to stand up and say and do the RIGHT thing despite the consequences. RIGHT thing being what bhudurajanan wahanse would practice hence some true Buddhists unlike the Taleban version that has been concocted to curse this nation lately. They are the worst kind of profiteers who are on the path to destroy Buddhism for ever in SL. Be gone and let us and our children live in peace for once. I thank CBK and the rest to have come forward to saving the country by being true to the word Buddhists. Let us all support this most noble and worthy cause before the donkeys amongst us drag us into another black hole.

An inefficient woman who even had to sacrifice an eye instead of life to Tamil Tigers and was ready to give Prabakaran a self-rule of North & East for 10 year period under ISGA stupid system, now wants to re-emerge as savior of the nation and looking to grab the power either hook or by crook! An opportunistic/power hunger statement!

Madam hats off to you. You have proved over and over again that you and the Bandaranayakes or no racists. If you go back into history it was JR and closely followed by MR who covertly support the communal minded elements to incite divisions among the communities in order to maintain their two third Majority and to y life the way they want. We will support you in what ever form to bring a semblance of law and order so that all citizens could lead a life without any fear or favour.

Mason Wednesday, 29 January 2014 06:46 AM
Very much agree with 'Direstraits'. There was harmony amongst religious communities before the current regime. To advance their agenda covert support is being extended to radical forces. We are thankful to the former President for lending her voice to support the moderates toward peaceful coexistence of all religions.

It is true that moderates are targeted. The srilankan citizen is very good, unless he is provoked unnecessarily by the politicians for their benefits. if not they don't have any animosity towards other communities. The society should disallow racists and violaters of human rights.
