Milk powder imports to be tested for DCD: Ministry

The Health Ministry’s Food advisory Committee had made it compulsory for milk powder importers to obtain a certificate from a recognized Laboratory certifying that imported milk powder does not contain Dicyanamide (DCD), the Health Ministry said yesterday.

This transpired at a meeting held yesterday at the Health Ministry in the presence of Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Maheepala. The meeting was held on the instruction of Health Minister Mithripala Sirisena in response to several media reports on the quality of imported milk powder.

It was also decided to carry out tests on the quality of the milk powder at various stages by a recognised laboratory and to appoint a subcommittee to carry out further tests to check the presence of DCD.

The Health Ministry said no food items could contain harmful chemicals and if any were to be found such substances legal action would be taken against those concerned.

If the government have a plan to introduce fresh milk instead milk powder as in developed countries, no need to worry too much about imported milk powder. But now this statement should be released to protect the other minister who said something stupid

We have seen similar stunts earlier. Once the correct 'palms are oiled' all these are forgotten. Could the ministry please declare for how long and what frequency this regulation will be applied?.This request comes from a former Accountant of 'HIghland' national brand who knows how the game is played.

The only way to check if the milk powder has DCD is to collect them randomly from supermarkets and run the tests. If DCD is found in any brand, prosecuting should be followed by jail sentence for the big wigs of the companies.
