Bus owners alleged today that the former Western Provincial Council Transport Minister Upali Kodikara had violated election laws at the Provincial Council Elections and said that it would urge the Elections Commissioner to revoke Mr. Kodikara’s membership in the Provincial Council.
“Mr. Kodikara had worn a dress displaying his election number when he went to cast the vote, which is a violation of election laws,” Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne charged.
“He had also taken a photographer with him. We will complain to the Election Commissioner about these violations asking him to revoke Mr. Kodikara’s membership in the Provincial Council,” he said.
He said the transport sector in the Western Province had severely affected during the last five years and alleged the former Transport Minister was responsible for the situation.
“Former Transport Minister had given bus permits illegally when he was in office,” he said.
Mr. Wijeratne said that the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) had shown a downfall in the results of the elections in the Western Province and said Mr. Kodikara was one reason for the low performance of the UPFA.
He said the LPBOA had requested the Additional Secretary of the President to appoint someone well-educated and intelligent as the new Provincial Council Transport Minister.
He said that they would file a case in the Court of Appeal against Mr. Kodikara and his wrongdoings as the former Transport Minister. (Sanath Desmond & Lahiru Pothmulla)
