Video: Rs.700 mn worth heroin seized

Over a hundred kilogrammes of heroin worth about Rs.700 million found hidden inside moulding machines imported from Karachchi, Pakistan were seized by the Sri Lanka Customs at the Orugodawatta container yard today, Customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said

The heroin was packed inside three moulding machines and this is thought to be the largest haul detected in the country, he said.

Deputy Customs Director U.G. Kulatilake from the Orugodawatta container yard said, the machines were received to the yard last week. The machines were declared as used machinery.

“At a glance we were suspicious and assumed these used machines could contain some kind of drugs especially since the shipment originated from Pakistan. Then we carried out the raid with the help of the customs narcotic bureau,” Mr. Kulatilake said.

The heroin haul was hidden inside the cylindrical part of the moulding machines.

One machine that has already been dismantled had 31 packets of heroin weighing one kilogramme each. Another two machines are to be dismantled.

Four people including three wharf clerks who came to clear the shipment were arrested, he said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
