Lankan arrested while trying to smuggle out cash
A 53-year-old Sri Lankan male was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last evening while attempting to smuggle foreign currency equivalent to Rs. 6,638,222 concealed inside his hand baggage, Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
Mr. Gamini said the suspect was from Wattala. He had been attempting to take out 180,000 Saudi Riyal, 540 Kuwaiti Dinar and 31,000 Japanese Yen by hiding them inside the handles of his hand baggage in 16 bundles.
The suspect was arrested while he was on his way to Singapore. Further investigations are being carried out by Customs officials. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
