Video: I will join Govt; Dayasiri

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that he would be making a special statement in parliament today at 2. 00 PM and inform of his resignation from parliament and thereafter will contest for the Chief Ministerial Post on the UPFA ticket.

“I will resgin from parliament today and thereafter will contest for the Chief Ministerial post for the NWP elections under the UPFA” he told Daily Mirror Online a shortwhile ago.

Speaking to the media after his resignation from the United National Party, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara claimed that he would not go back on his utterances against the government in the past but would rather embrace all policies of President Mahinda Rajapaksa from now on and would dedicate all his efforts to ensure that the current government continued to be in power.

“I’m not going to vomit on what I said before against the current government, but now it’s a new beginning and I will make all efforts to ensure that the current regime under the helm of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is kept in power,” he said.

Answering questions posed by journalists, Jayasekara said that he could no longer continue to be a member of the UNP “which is dictatorial and would be a waste of my life.”

“I have much more to offer to his country and its people and continuing to stay in a party that is dictatorial and with a leadership which has lost touch with the common man is futile; hence my decision to join the government.”

He refuted claims to the effect that he had crossed over in order to further personal benefits and said that he would work towards the common good of the people of the provinces.

“I could have slung mud on the face of the UNPers who voted me by walking down the aisle and joining the government in parliament. I didn’t do that. Instead I want to put myself before the people and hear their verdict. That is the reason I resigned from parliament and decided on a new beginning,” he said.

Jayasekara also claimed that he was offered ministerial posts at various times but declined all of them and decided to contest an election in order to ensure that his conscience was clean.

“There were various other offers from time to time including the offer of Ministerial posts. But I declined all of them in order to contest and give the people the chance to give a verdict,” he said.

He said that 48 Provincial level politicians have pledged their support to him and insisted that he would not confine his efforts to ensure victory at the upcoming North Western Provincial Council elections.

He left the conference flanked by Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, MP Duminda Silva and MP Manusha Nanayakkara. Thereafter Jayasekara visited the President and obtained  membership of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party
