Glass in injection vial
A material similar to particles of glass had been found in an injection vial at the Marawila Base Hospital yesterday.The injection vial, Meropenem 550mg, had been manufactured in India and according to the Health Services Trade Union Alliance (HSTUA) hospital officials have taken steps to ban the batch 170304 from the Marawila Hospital.
The HSTUA said the material which looked like glass were found when the powder like antibiotic was taken out to be mixed in distilled water before being prepared to be given to a patient at the Intensive Care Unit.
In response to the situation the Ministry of Health issuing a statement said it was taking steps to stop the use of Meropenam 500mg countrywide.
“An Indian company, Penomer Neon Laborataary, has manufactured this injection. Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayathilake has advised to ban the use of this particular injection and Dr. Hemantha Benaragma, Director of the Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority will issue a circular banning the injection,” the statement said.
Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena has also ordered the Health Secretary to make a complaint in writing to the Medical Supply Authorities and Minister of Health in India regarding this foreign material found inside the vial.
On December 30, 2012, a similar incident occurred when a piece of glass was detected in an injection vial under the pharmaceutical name Cloxacillin at the Kalubowila Hospital which was also banned after detection. (Sarasi Paranamanna, Jude Samantha)
