Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil’s wife Feroza has resigned from the United National Party (UNP) National Executive Committee today less than 24 hours after the party refused her nomination to contest the elections to the Western Provincial Council.
Meanwhile Mayor Muzammil is also expected to resign from the party’s working committee next week.
In her letter of resignation addressed to Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ms. Muzammil said she would not have anything to do with the UNP from now on.
She accused some members of treating the UNP as their private property and said this was unfair and unjust.
“UNP supporters are gradually losing faith in the party because a few members are attempting to gain control of the party,” she said.
Ms. Muzammil said she had been denied nomination as a result of few a people with vested interests holding the party leadership to ransom.
“I am extremely saddened on being denied nomination because of the dictates of a few members,” she said in her resignation letter.
In it Ms. Muzammil recalled that she had rendered yeomen service to the needy people in the city through her Kantha Saviya Programme. She said the Kantha Saviya had given bank books to needy children, stationery to school children, women empowerment programmes were conducted and provided various relief schemes for pregnant mothers.
Ms. Muzammil said she and the members of Kantha Saviya had not hesitated to participate in various protest marches launched by the UNP in the recent times. (Yohan Perera)

"UNP supporters are gradually losing faith" So to have faith in the party all those who seek nominations have to be accepted. What an opportunist and self server.
