Excavation of mass grave resumes today



Mannar Police today confirmed that excavations at the mass grave in Thiruketheeswaram would resume today in the presence of Mannar Magistrate Ananthi Kanagaratnam.

The excavations were suspended on January 31 on the orders of the Magistrate in view of the Thiruketheeswaram Temple Festival.

The skeletal remains of some 55 bodies were found in a mass grave which was discovered on December 20 when workers were digging a trench to lay pipes for the supply of water to the area.

Twenty eight of the skeletal remains were securely packed in boxes on the orders of the Magistrate and are kept at the Mannar General Hospital. (S. Rosarian Lambert)
