Court rejects motion not to arrest Basil on arrival

Kaduwela Magistrate Dhammika Hemapala today ordered the arrest of former Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa over allegations of financial frauds and to produce him in Court.

The Magistrate issued this order after dismissing a motion filed by Mr. Rajapaksa’s Counsel U.R. De Silva requesting that the previous order issued to the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) to arrest his client on arrival to the country be set aside.

The Magistrate directed that the suspect be produced in Court according to the previous order. The motion was heard without the FCID, which filed the case. (G.Ilangakon Menike)

Basil will never come by his own. His life is in threat by Mahinda Rajapaksa sons. Therefore it is always better to have protection in the police custody.

The amounts stolen or lost are huge and public money. He should be arrested on arrival and if he fails to arrive in Sri Lanka, Interpol should be altered to catch him
