Commonwealth rejects Canada's concerns

The Commonwealth Secretariat says it is disappointed about Canada's decision to dramatically downgrade its presence at next month's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, the ABC reported.

The secretariat's spokesman, Richard Uku, told the ABC that at the end of the day it was up to each member country to determine its level of representation.

"Canada is a highly valued member of the Commonwealth family and its contribution to the association continues to provide enormous benefit to other member countries," he said.

"At the end of the day, we have to respect the government's wish."

Mr Uku said the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth secretary-general have continued to work closely with the Sri Lankan government to ensure that progress takes place in the areas of domestic governance, reconciliation and respect for human rights.

"In the area of human rights, we've been working very closely with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and with other institutions to strengthen institutions and build in areas where we think there needs to be improvement," he said.
