A chimpanzee had bitten off part of the finger of the zookeeper who used to look after it at the Dehiwala Zoo today causing serious injury, sources said.
The victim Tilak Pushpa Kumara was admitted to Kalubowila Hospital after the incident. The keeper had looked after the animal who is named ‘Tony’ since it was an infant. It has been caged in the zoo for six years after its mother abandoned it. It shares the cage with another chimpanzee.
Mr. Kumara had been bitten when he tried to feed the chimp a toffee after caressing its head affectionately. All of a sudden, the animal had suddenly become violent and bitten the man’s index finger -- in the presence of visitors to the zoo who were shocked by the attack.
The man was admitted to the accident ward of the hospital. Hospital sources said the severed part of the finger could not be rejoined through a surgery as the nerves had been damaged. (H.H. Dharmapala)

Now they'll say that the poor chimp is dangerous and have him put down, Animals are not meant to be kept locked up in cages, it's as simple as that. Close down all zoo's and promote more national parks where the animals can roam around more freely.

D, are you crazy? Then they will have to abandon Hambantota project as well. Also, how on earth are they functioning the Guruge Nature Park without a murmur from the Animals' Rights activists???

Recently, i visited the Zoo and found most of the animals in poor condition. They seems to be not properly fed, unhygienic living conditions and the dens were infested with rats. The good old days, where the zoo looked tidy and with healthy animals is no more.

Despite their looks Chimps are fierce animals. Search Chimpanzee attacks. You should never mingle with a chimp without any protection.

Words of wisdom. This guy must have spent a good part of his life time with Chimps to know so such about their traits.

I suggest we get Tony a nomination in the next election. He has learnt the correct Lankan leadership qualities to be successful. I am pretty sure he will win considering there are so many other primates who are less worthy already in the parliament. All elected by us! At least Tony will be with his mates.

No wonder these animals are angry when you look at the conditions they are kept. This is simple animal cruelty the way the animals are kept at the Dehiwala Zoo. As Buddhist country, we should be ashamed of the condition of all the animals at this zoo. Where is BBS ?.

They are quite loveable animals with the brains of a 3 year kid. Put a human in a cage for six years in that conditions and see how violent and broken he will be. Dehivala zoo should upgrade its conditions and to a better location from polluted Colombo. via DM Android App
