Opposition United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today proposed the setting up of a parliamentary monitoring committee to look into the threats faced by the Buddha Sasana.
“We have already suggested the setting up of a parliamentary committee to monitor the development of various important sectors and it would be possible to set up such a monitoring system to look into the threats faced by the Buddha Sasana,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said at a meeting he had with a group of professionals on safeguarding the Buddha Sasana.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said the efforts made by the present regime to control the Buddha Sasana as and how it pleases was the biggest threat faced by the Sasana today.
He accused the present regime seeking the advice of some monks instead of following the age-old tradition of seeking the advise of the most venerable Maha Nayaka Theras.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said the role of advisors should not be confined to a selected set of Bikkhus because all Bikkhus had the right to proffer advise at any time.
He said various organisations are being set up to control the Buddha Sasana and thus isolate the Maha Nayaka Theras.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said the Executive Presidency was also a threat to the Sasana as it was the executive presidency which paved the way to set up casinos and hold night races in the Sacred City of Kandy.
He urged the abolition of the Executive presidency, the reinstating of the 17th Amendment and the setting up of a parliamentary monitoring committee to safeguard Buddhism.
National Board of Intellectuals President Professor H. W. Cyril who spoke on behalf of the professionals proposed the setting up of an organisation to counter other organisations which carry out various activities under the cover Buddhism. (Yohan Perera, Chaturanga Pradeep and Yoshitha Perera)

Yes Sir, I agree that the Buddha Sasana is at risk. Buddhism is a philosophy and a science. It is not a religion where you can sell. In this information age, do we need these Sasanas?

First world countries are ahead because they learned to separate the state from religion. Besides, Buddhism is not a religion, it's a philosophy, so why do we have these constraints? Move on, Sri Lanka needs to grow and the Priests need to step out of political movements, start with BBS!
