Seriously, the national anthem should be sung by the 1st language of the country. This country was built by our Kings, and people of sri lanka, who existed long before, these idiotic ministers came to power. If you compare countries like UK, US, there are so many languages being spoken. But they don't use other languages to sing their national songs. Its such an outrage. seriously. These kind of decisions can actually lead to national crisis, following racial issues and ethnic differences.
Dear President, Please do not approve this. There is so much trouble sri lanka has gone through. and i believe, these kind of decisions will only cause trouble

Bad idea and it will only bolster the hard line Tamils. India with 15 languages in her constitution has her national language in Hindi. There is a reason to keep the national language to the majority of the people. It may have the opposite effect and raise Eelam again.

Why the national anthem in singhalese and tamil?
There is nothing wrong in having it in singhalese only as the population is mostly singalese .The situation is the same in almost all countries. If not we would have to include verses in English,Malay,Arabic etc.
We should not go backwards ,lets move on.

Good move Mr. Nanayakkara. But I personally prefer 3 national anthems, one in Sinhala, one in Tamil and one in English all with identical meaning. Still, some thing is better than nothing. Sri Lanka should be Tri-lingual. Language one speaks is actually irrelevant! Being "Sri Lankan" is what matters and not the language, race, caste or religion.

What the hell is going on in Sri Lanka? This is what I called "political correctness" gone too far. In India, they speak 100s of languages, but their national anthem is sung in Hindi. In Australia, there are more then 150 nationalities but we sing " "Advance Australia Fair" in English and in English ONLY.
Tamils have to learn to sing our national anthem in Sinhala if they would like to be a part of Sri Lanka. Otherwise, catch a boat to TN.

Not to be raciest, but I totally agree with Master Sir. We don't need a remix of the national anthem. A Tamil translated version , an English translated version or whatever translated VERSION is fine but please keep the national anthem as it is.
Or else they can add something to then national anthem , like , " We are equal " in many languages ; or whatever without ruining it.
To give the minorities more equality , we have many things to change in the constitution.
Even Uncle Sam (he's our uncle too) doesn't have a remixed star-spangled banner.

Let us be clear that where we stand is Sri Lanka first of all!! We do not have to emulate what other countries prefer to do with their National Anthems, we can have our own identity and own mark in our National Anthem!! Personally I think this move is a commendable one in the long-run since it creates a sense of belonging to all communities living in this country. Like some have suggested, maybe we can add something in English and Malay as well.

There are lot of racists in Sri Lanka.
I am a Sinhalese, but I believe we are all children of mother Lanka.
A new national anthem with two languages is very good in my opinion.
Like in countries like South Africa and New Zealand.
The Sinhalese majority has to remember that we do not have some so called power over other races just because our population is more. Creating such tensions, earlier with Tamils and in recent months with Muslims are only going to show how racists we are.
We are all human beings and are all Sri Lankans, race is a thing of the past in my opinion. DNA analysis has revealed that there is no big difference between the DNA composition of Sinhalese and Tamils, we are all humans and we all need to work together to build this nation.
8 28
RW Thursday, 24 January 2013 04:21 AM
South Africa and New Zealand.
Note that its a very good idea, to showcase that we are not a racist country and the national anthem is sung in the two major languages in the country.
Whether we like it or not Tamils played a big part in Sri Lanka's history as well, therefore I think its fair to include this.
Well done to GOSL for proposing something like this.
Note I am a Sinhalese, but I believe we are all children of mother Lanka

For those who are in confusion: Official versions of Sri Lanka's National Anthem is already the Sinhala and Tamil Versions (constitutionally) and there are many other bi-lingual or multilingual national anthems in the world: South Africa, New Zealand, Canada are few of them.
However, we shouldn't have a bi-lingual anthem because others have done the same. In fact, as Sinhalese and Tamil are the National and Official Languages of the country at equal level, it is indeed important to have the National Anthem also in both languages as a nation that shares two languages as the principal languages.
Unfortunately, we cannot make it multilingual to add, English or Malay or so forth as Sri Lanka has 25 other minority communities other than those who speaks Sinhalese and Tamils.
Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration has obviously taken a right move... Hope the President and the Cabinet of Ministers will do what is healthy for our nation...

Burghers r the minority in the country and the worst part is not even the president mentions them in his speech's but they have done alot to the country. if you can recall your history. what burgher speaks Tamil 1 in a million i guess, their mother language is English . my point is Sri lanka is a multi-cultural country. and most Tamils prefer to speak in English. my suggestion is that if only the national anthem be in shinhalese and English. or why can't it be in all three languages. (certain parts) like other countries. ETHNIC PROBLEM SOLVED.
